WHO IS A COMMUNITY JOURNALIST?
A community journalist reports on the happenings and events that take shape in the place around them, touching and observing all aspects of an ongoing community life–including ‘regular events’, and also incidents and accidents. Their reporting keeps the community alive and observant to its own affairs, keeps records, keeps people connected and informed, and grants significance to events that would otherwise fade into oblivion. To the Community Journalist, the apparently small and the mundane matters. They are the ones who sees news in sheep’s diseases, community births, and the grafting of trees for protection from winter.

WHAT’S THE CHARM?
In the 21st century, the Community Journalist is becoming more important than high-profile journalists in large media empires. Why? Because the CJ has their feet and eyes and ears on the ground. They are the first to see local glaciers breaking off. They reach the shepherds who discovered the likes of Dead Sea Scrolls–parchments that contained Biblical text, discovered in a cave. They are the ones who spot animals dying and disease emerge. They are the ones who hear about new species, new local songs, the emergence of political thought and rest or unrest.

The Community Journalist is the front guard of news; they knew yesterday what the national journalist will learn tomorrow.

Our Suggestion:
If you are a traveler to the area, meet up HunzaOnline and see if you can submit some of your stories and photos to be featured on their portal. Also, while you’re at it, consider giving a (free) workshop to the local (community) journalists and writers!
